In 46 prisons across Kenya and Uganda, the Justice Defenders organization is training hundreds of inmates, many of whom don't have their own lawyer, to become paralegals and attorneys.
60 Minutes – the oldest and most watched television newsmagazine in America –Watch this featured Justice Defenders in their Sunday, 20 December 2020 broadcast. Internationally recognized reporter and CNN News anchor Anderson Cooper travelled to Kenya to see our work. He spent time visiting prison communities in Kenya. And he met with our paralegals and legal scholars to learn more about our legal education, training, and practise within defenceless communities.
Among those who had a chance to share their story is Morris Kaberia. A former prisoner, Morris successfully represented himself – appealing his conviction and overturning his sentence after spending 13 years in prison.
Justice Defenders paralegal Isaac Ndegwa Kimaru is also profiled. While serving a 14-year sentence, Issac studied law in the middle of the night with an overturned bucket for a desk, and finished his degree through the University of London in four years. He now supports those who do not have legal representation, advocating for their rights and assisting in appeals.
